HennessyV.S · Made For More

How it was made
Normally with still life you build the set and you build the light, and everything in the frame is something you have put there. On this one we didn't take any lights at all.
On location
The locations were the film's. Rather than build them in the studio we went back to the same places the television campaign had shot, on different days, and that's what keeps the stills in the same visual language as the rest of the campaign.
Cape Town: white walls with openings cut through them and a pool below, then a lawn, a rooftop, a clay court. Four serves in four places and one light across all of them, because there was only the sun.
On the day
Three days in December, which is summer there, and the first ran from early afternoon until the light went at six. We worked the sun the way we'd work a light in the studio, negative fill to take it off and mirrors to put it back, and because it never stops moving someone was on them all day. The rest is timing: waiting for the light to arrive where the shot needed it.
Using the sun rather than mimicking it gives a truer result. It was also a good way to be out of the studio, and out of my comfort zone.
